| 1. |
Turn the vehicles ignition completely off.
(removing the key from the ignition is the best way to ensure that) |
| 2. |
Locate your hood release.
(on most BMW's the release is a black lever near your left foot
as you are seated in the drivers seat.)
Note: The hood release will not open the hood fully. There is a
secondary latch in the grill that must be pulled out as you are
pulling the hood open. |
|
| 3. |
Locate the two remote battery terminals in your engine compartment
(positive, and negative) the positive terminal will always be covered
with a plastic cover bearing a cross or positive sign. It may also
be wrapped with red plastic tape or connector. (See attached above
photo). The positive terminal will be found in different positions
on different models. In this photo (An E39 528, it is located in the
middle of the intake on the top of the engine. And here on the passenger’s
side strut tower (Most E46 models). The negative terminal is similar
in shape to the positive terminal but will be uncovered. Shown here
on the passenger side of the E46. |

Whether you are using standard car-to-car cables or a “jumper
box” the cables will be marked with red and black. Red will
always be connected to positive and black will always be connected
to negative. If you are using a second vehicle (this method is not
recommended by BMW as you are unable to control the amount of power
transferred from one car to another) Always connect both ends of the
negative cable (black) to both cars prior to attaching the positive
(red), then attempt to start the car. The second vehicle should not
be started unless a car-to-car connection will not start the vehicle,
and never should need to be “revved up” rather allow the
second vehicle to idle once connected for 5 to 10 minutes to slowly
bring the battery up to a correct charge. |
| 5. |
NEVER connect a jumper of any kind directly to a BMW battery. This
will result in damage to the vehicle or your self. |
| 6. |
Some BMW’s will require having some systems reset
after a battery failure. Most notably the clock, radio code or the
seat memory settings. If you are unable to reset any of these things
please contact the service department, we would be glad to help. |
